The system is divided into four main sections – primary, secondary, higher and higher education. 776 institutions of higher education in 82 regions of Russia accept international students, and choosing Russia as a destination to study abroad will give you a variety of options in finding the right higher education for you!

Three types of higher education institutions in Russia

  1. Universities offer a wide range of programs at all levels.
  2. Academies focus more on research and practical skills, usually assigned to specific areas such as art, architecture or science.
  3. Institutes are independent branches of universities or academies that offer vocational educational courses.

The higher education system of Russia is famous for its achievements and focus in the field of science and technology. Many courses offered at state-funded institutions focus on science, but a great variety of humanities and social sciences programs are offered as well!

In recent years, private higher education institutions have emerged to complement these traditional Russian institutions, offering programs in other fields such as economics, business and law.

Structures of certificates in the Russian education system

While education in Russia is largely based on Bologna principles, education in Russia builds degrees slightly differently from other countries in Europe.

Upon completion of secondary education, students can earn a bachelor's degree or specialization, both of which qualify students to pursue a master's degree later. A bachelor's degree is awarded after four years of full-time study at a university. Specialization degrees are awarded after at least five years of study and are more focused on practical education in the field of the student's choice. Both qualified students require successful dissertation defense and passing exams. This degree is awarded in all fields except medicine, where the first stage of education lasts for six years.

Master's degrees are awarded after two years of study with one year dedicated to research that includes practice and preparation for the defense of a dissertation.

Students with a master's degree are eligible to pursue doctoral studies. Post-graduate education is divided into two parts in Russia, and two degrees are required to confirm students' status as scientists. Postgraduate studies can only be pursued at a university or scientific institute. After successfully completing the first part of their education after graduation, students are awarded the degree of Science Candidate.

The final doctoral degree is obtained after an additional 2-4 years of postgraduate study. This certificate then leads to a doctoral degree. Because there is a 10-year gap between the two degrees, final doctoral qualifications are often awarded to science candidates after they have been good at their careers in academia.

There is no bachelor's or master's degree in the Soviet system and they were offered to match the Russian education system with international standards in accordance with the Bologna process.

In addition, an MBA in Russia is becoming more popular among international students, as Russia is considered a financial superpower in the energy and gas sectors.

This change has helped Russian higher education qualifications gain recognition and admission abroad, which was a previous problem for international graduates, and also explains the growing number of international students choosing Russia as a destination to study abroad!
