The University of Heidelberg, is a public research university in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the University of Heidelberg was founded in 1386 on the instructions of Pope Urban VI, the oldest university in Germany and one of the oldest in the world, was the third university founded in the Holy Roman Empire.

Heidelberg has been a mixed institution since 1899, the university consists of twelve faculties and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral programs in about 100 disciplines, in Heidelberg there are three main campuses, most of the humanities are located in Heidelberg's Old City, natural sciences and medicine in the Noenheimerfeld region, and the social sciences in Inner Bergheim, the language of instruction is usually German, while a large number of postgraduate degrees are offered in English in addition to some in French.

 Admission requirements for the University of Heidelberg

Initially, all applicants from non-EU countries must apply for admission online on the University of Heidelberg website.

  • Proof of health insurance.
  • A financial statement confirming the ability to spend 725 euros per month.
  • Official certified certificates such as high school diploma or bachelor's degree for master's candidates.
  • Proficiency in German level DSH 2, Goethe 2 certificate or equivalent certificates confirming proficiency in the German language.

University of Heidelberg Library

Constructed in 1905, the University Library is the main library of the University and, together with the libraries of decentralized colleges and institutes, forms an integrated university library system with approximately 6.7 million printed books.It is the most widely used library in Germany and currently ranks first in the ranking of the best libraries in Germany.  

The University's library stock exceeded one million in 1934 and today houses about 3.2 million books, about 500,000 other media such as microfilm and videotape, as well as 10,732 scientific periodicals, in addition to which it contains 6,600 manuscripts, including Codex Manesse, 1,800 incunabula, 110,500 signatures, and a collection of maps, paintings, and old photographs.The libraries of other 83 decentralized colleges and institutes contain 3.5 million printed books.  

In 2005, 34,500 active users of the university library gained access to 1.4 million books annually, and the presentation of traditional books is complemented by many electronic services.About 3,000 commercial scientific journals accessible through the electronic journal.

The roots of the current university library go back to the purchase of a box of documents by the first rector Marcellus von Engen in 1388, which was stored in Heiliggeistkirche, then the University Cathedral.

Since 1978, the Science Branch of the University Library has served the institutes of natural sciences and medicine on the new campus.

In 2016, major renovations were completed and the university library now has additional space to study.

University of Heidelberg World Rankings

According to the 2018 Funding Report issued by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which divides scholarships from 2014 to 2016, the University of Heidelberg ranked second among German universities in the overall ranking, 7th in the humanities and social sciences and 4th among German universities .

Approvals are standardized based on the size of the university, as part of a competitive selection process, DFG selects and funds the best research projects from researchers at universities and research institutes, therefore, the ranking is an indicator of the quality of research.  

In the 2019 World University Academic Paper Performance Rankings (NTU Rankings), which measures the research outputs of universities, the University of Heidelberg ranked first in Germany and fifth in continental Europe.  

In the 2019 CWTS Leiden rankings, the University of Heidelberg ranked first in Germany and 13th in continental Europe for all sciences based on scientific influence (number of publications in preliminary journals).According to the "Cooperation" index, the University of Heidelberg ranks first in Germany and tenth in Europe.  

Heidelberg was ranked based on the number of Nobel laureates affiliated with the university at the time of the Nobel Prize announcement, and Heidelberg ranked first in Germany, fourth in Europe and 13th globally in 2013.

In October 2012, the New York Times ranked the University of Heidelberg 12th in the world in terms of employability.The ranking is based on a survey of recruiters and executives from leading global companies in twenty countries.  

Shanghai University Academic Ranking Jiao Tong of World Universities ranked Heidelberg first nationally and 47th globally in 2018.

The best international universities in the US News & World Report ranked Heidelberg University in second place nationally and 54th globally in 2019.

In the Times Higher Education Rankings 2020, the University of Heidelberg ranked third in Germany and 44th globally.  

In 2019, QS World University Rankings ranked the University of Heidelberg 64th in the world

According to the third European report on science and technology indicators prepared by the European Commission, Heidelberg ranks fourth nationally and ninth in Europe.
